Toasting Abhay

How can anyone have a problem with actor Abhay Deol roasting some of the leading actors of Bollywood on the issue of endorsing fairness creams?
But the actors in question are using their celebrity status to cash in by endorsing products. What about ethics? Should the actors take responsibility for the consequences of the products they endorse, for which they collect a huge sum?
Hugely successful actors have a large following. The fans take things seriously and invest emotionally in the real life actions of the stars. Should an actor be careful in what he/she does or say? Aamir Khan had a big impact with his television serial Satyamav Jayate as he took some of the controversial issues and pushed for social change. Abhay is now using his celebrity status to hit out at other actors for their hypocrisy and lack of social consciousness.
Racism is a cultural thing. We Indians fully endorse it. Now our popular actors are also doing it by selling the dream of a lighter, whiter India. There are two problems one can dissect in this issue. The questionable efficacy of the fairness creams and the role of actors in selling a product that endorses racist tendencies. We need a lot of actors like Abhay to take on the status quo and actually endorse a cause. Actors ought to take responsibility. Claiming that they have nothing to do with what the product can or not do is simply not acceptable. Credibility comes with doing the right thing.
