The scenes of flooding in Western Europe on BBC World News was highly disturbing. There was heavy damage to infrastructure and more than a hundred lives were lost. If this was in any developing country, the images would not have prompted a reaction. It is considered normal for such flooding to occur regularly in India and Bangladesh. The frequency with which the so-called natural calamities are occurring in the West begs some questions.
Australia went through months of forest fire in 2019-20. The western forest areas of United States is once again ablaze and the drought situation is only making it worse. Volcanic activities in Hawaii, Iceland and Congo are yet another warning for things to come. We had the flooding due to the glacier breaking off and destroying the dams downstream in Uttarakhand just a few months back. Global warming and resultant climate change is not good for anyone.
When will the world realise the consequences of our greed for exploiting the natural resources? We have had innumerable warnings of imminent catastrophe. The latest statistics out of Australia shows that the country has achieved only 10% of the climate goals. We are running out of time. We are far away from finding another green planet. We are living in one. We need to preserve it.
